Paving clinkers are natural products with a long shelf life and high resistance. A special feature are the very numerous colors due to the different additives. This small seating area in the garden was even made from recycled stones.

The stain fades: Greasy barbecue sauce, salad oil or water stains quickly spoil the joy of the new terrace. A colorless impregnation protects and makes cleaning easier. In the case of exposed clinker brick surfaces, the stain usually almost disappears by itself.

The clinker bricks can be broken with a sharp hammer – but not always in the desired place.

The last piece is more like a mosaic and only progresses piece by piece. Practical tip: Instead of choosing a free pattern, you can of course lay the stones in a solid bond.

From now on, precision work is the order of the day, because the recycled stones are unevenly shaped and of different lengths and thicknesses.

The border was started here. Arrange the clinker with staggered joints and knock in with a hammer.

Then the area is covered with a board or something similar. smoothly peeled off. Do not enter this area anymore!

In this case, the gradient of approx. 1 to 2 percent leads towards the bed. Check with a spirit level.

Then you remove the sward and dig out the soil. With this size you can just do it “by hand”. Determine the required depth beforehand: consider that there is also a gravel layer!

Use a spade to cut off the outer frame in the lawn. Practical tip: You can use the grass sods to repair damaged areas.

First you determine the desired dimensions and shape of the new seat. To do this, lay out a few stones and add the furniture too!

Thanks to the pavers, the small terrace fits into the garden in no time at all and is used with pleasure!

We just wanted to pave a small seat with clinker brick so that we could enjoy the first rays of sunshine with a cup of coffee in the morning. But the desired semicircular shape made the installer work up a sweat – every stone was turned and turned several times and the perfect spot was sought. Because these clinker bricks did not come directly from industrial (and therefore dimensionally accurate) production, but are still hand-formed and have been recycled.

Terrace planning terraces If you want to plan a terrace properly, you should first think about the purpose

Buy paving clinker

In East Friesland, clinker bricks were used in road construction for a long time, but gradually disappeared through smooth asphalt. Many a person kept the pavers that were picked up at the time and have become useless – fortunately. So it has a real patina right from the start and blends in seamlessly! However, especially with these irregularly shaped paving stones, there was a lot that was unusable. You can expect around 5 (to 10) percent waste. The more arcs on the surface, the more waste you have to plan.

Practical tip: When buying clinker, the color of the fire is always important. Better to buy one to two square meters more than calculated; it could be difficult (if not impossible) to buy the same color later, because clinker is burned at very high temperatures. The pores close and the stones hardly absorb any more water. The color nuances are created by surcharges during production.

Grouting terrace paving stones correctly Once you have laid your stone paving, you must also joint the paving stones

Maintain clinker

Long-term protective treatment makes sense to protect the freshly laid surface from stains. It is important that the clinker brick is absorbent! If you want to freshen up the color of your possibly weathered paving clinker, clinker and ceramic oil is recommended – however, the treatment must be repeated regularly. Sealing only works if no moisture can rise from below; so it’s hardly feasible.
