Build an underground refrigerator for the garden yourself

Especially in summer heat, it is important to drink a lot so that the body does not become dehydrated. After their work is done, amateur gardeners can look forward to a cold and refreshing drink. However, not every garden has a power connection or the refrigerator is far away. Garden expert Peter Rasch has exactly the right tip for this: a self-made underground refrigerator.

Materials required for self-assembly

To build an underground refrigerator, you need an inner tube with a diameter of around 200 millimeters, an outer tube with a diameter of around 250 millimeters, a 10 millimeter threaded rod, a plywood sheet, two lids for the large tube, a piece of an old device handle and two screws. The outer tube serves as the body of the refrigerator and the inner tube is the cup holder.

Bury the outer tube in the ground

The hardest part is digging the pipe in. The following applies: the deeper, the better. One meter is sufficient. The floor temperature there is around ten degrees and is well suited for cooling the drinks. So that it doesn’t get too strenuous, it’s worth using a hole spade or, at best, an auger. It is important that the underside of the underground refrigerator is provided with a lid so that no animals or moisture can get inside. In addition, let the pipe into the ground as vertically as possible, so there is less chance that something will tip over or leak.

Inner tube serves as a cup holder

For the inner part of the refrigerator, first draw three circles on the plywood board and then cut them out. These should be slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the small pipe. In the middle you get a hole that corresponds to the diameter of the threaded rod. The shelves are then attached to the threaded rod with two washers and lock nuts each. The distance can be individually adjusted to the size of your favorite drink.

Now the filling holes are marked on the inner tube. The cut-outs start about two inches above the base and run up to the next sheet of plywood. The width should be chosen so that your own hand and bottle fit well into the opening. Now the handle from the device handle is cut to the width of the pipe and screwed to the upper end of the threaded rod and to the side of the pipe. The cup holder can be filled.

Lid with styrofoam insulation

Finally, the lid is placed on the outer tube so that it does not rain in. A styrofoam plate can also be fitted into the lid as insulation. A flower pot on the refrigerator also provides shade. The workload for the construction of the underground refrigerator is about two hours.
